St Mathews Church, Harwell. The funeral service of Sandy Mackie and three of his crew was conducted here. Their coffins were carried through the gate below en route to Harwell Cemetery.

RAF Harwell opened as a bomber station in 1937 and transferred to the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in 1946. It is today the site of Harwell Business Park & Innovation Centre.

The War Graves section of Harwell Cemetery contains the graves of 59 air men and a member of The Royal Engineers from the WW2 period. There are 4 Canadians, 4 Australians and 2 New Zealanders, the remainder are Royal Air Force personel. It is believed that all of them died while stationed at RAF Harwell.

Vickers Wellington Medium Bomber

Vickers Wellington Bomber

Designed by Sir Barnes Wallis the Wellington was first flown by the RAF in 1938. The Mk IC was crewed by 6, a pilot, radio operator, navigator/bomb aimer, observer/nose gunner, tail gunner and waist gunner. It was powered by two 1050hp Bristol Pegasus XVIII engines that pulled it to 235 mph. It had a ceiling of 19,000 ft and a range of 1,805 miles. It came armed with eight 0.303 machine guns and could carry 4,500 lbs of bombs.
