Willie's grave in the Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension
The Cross of Sacrifice, Alter and graves at Tournai
William Middleton's grave is centre front with red roses to left
The author is forever grateful to the farmer who's field adjoins the cemetery extension behind the pavilions in the background of the above photograph. Having travelled from Scotland to visit the grave of my relative William Middleton and that of George Douglas at Tournai I was horrified to find the town cemetery closed at 6pm on a summer evening. The CWGC information site gave no advance notice of this. Like me, he
was aware that the land was the free gift of the Belgian people to
Great Britain and her Empire and kindly ' assisted ' my entry , thus
avoiding the need to walk through the closed town cemetery. Photographed August 2001
